Picture Past Exhibition

Picture Past Exhibition at Lowewood Museum
7 November – 27 February 2010

Please note that this exhibition has now ended

A box of old photographs with hundreds of negatives where discovered in 2006 by Adam Bigg as he was sorting out books in the house of his late Grandfather Maurice Swansborough. Many of the negatives where in very poor conditions, but Adam who had fortunately studied photography decided to restore and reprinted them.

The photographs were taken by Maurice Swansborough in the 1920’s and 1930’s. Tracing trips to the country, town and coast, these interesting photographs tell of an England at ease with its self. Of a life that had a slower pace, and of a nation with shared values. The exhibition Picture Past can show only a sample of those found, which are taken around Cheshunt, Waltham Cross and Hoddesdon.

I popped into your museum today with Adam Bigg, It brought back memories of my uncle Maurice and it was nice to see pictures of my mother in her youth. It was pleasant visit and an interesting look around the rest of the museum. It was also nostalgic to see pictures of Temple Bar, as I used to stroll past it while at Theobalds School some 49 years ago.
