Salisbury Arms, 105 High Street, Hoddesdon EN11 8TN
The Star in 1530; the Black Lion (Lyon) in 1568 and the Salisbury Arms in 1828. An old courthouse, believed to have been erected by the Earl of Salisbury in 1610, adjoined the inn on its north side. In 1848 a great dinner was held here to celebrate Hoddesdon’s first street lighting and the formation of a gas company. A gallows sign spanned the road until 1875 and in the 1920s there was a whippet dog track behind the inn.
