Evacuating such a large number of people was a very difficult and often confusing task. Evacuees (those who had been evacuated) would often travel home only be to be re-evacuated when the Germans struck again. It was impossible to keep an accurate record of how many people came and went, but below is a few dates and numbers to bear in mind:
September 1st 1939: Operation Pied Piper officially gets going and in just 3 days 3.5 million people are evacuated.
June/July 1940: Germany becomes even more of a threat when it takes over most of France. 200,000 people are evacuated
June 1944: Germany begins to fire V-1 bombs at Britain, a scary device otherwise known as the “Doodlebug.” 1.5 million evacuate London by September.
March 1946: Evacuation officially ended
