Colin Chapman at the wheel of a Lotus racing car at Delamare Road, Cheshunt
The world of Formula 1 racing saw the return of one of its most triumphant names recently when Lotus`s bid to return to the fast lane was accepted by the FIA. As one of the most successful teams in the sports history Lotus stormed to countless victories during the 60`s and late 80`s, although they have been notably absent since 1994.
Their staggering achievements included 7 constructors’ titles and they were the first team to achieve 50 Grand Prix victories. Unsurprisingly the team boasted some of the finest names in racing history including that of legendary Scotsman Jim Clark who raced for Lotus in the 60`s. Clark`s untimely death in 1968 (following a crash in Germany) ended the life of a man many have classed as Formula Ones greatest. From 1985-87 Lotus was also home to Ayrton Senna, another driver whose dazzling career was cut short on the track.
It may therefore come as a surprise to many Cheshunt residents that Lotus has its origins firmly rooted in the town’s history. In 1959 the team’s founder Colin Chapman moved to premises at Delamare Road and from there continued his unstoppable assault on Formula 1. Today the site is occupied by a plastic factory and fitness centre (Monster Gym) although signs of its remarkable past are still evident by the remaining ramp and winch which the team used to hoist cars down from the upper floor.
