Gas Mask
Local schools are able to gain valuable knowledge regarding World War 2 and the Victorian era from Lowewood Museum, High Street, Hoddesdon. Lowewood Museum holds boxes of memorabilia, one full of personal possessions from local residents dating back to World War 2 including a gas mask, ration book, air-raid helmet and a recipe book. The other contains Victorian artefacts dating back to the 1830s. Local schools can hire out either box for a period of one month. These can then be taken back into the school for the children to look at and handle the artefacts themselves.
World War 2 and Victorians are both subjects that can be included in the National Curriculum. The memorabilia available can be a valuable tool to give children an opportunity to touch and see for themselves actual objects from a period in history before they were born. If there are any local schools who would like to hire out these boxes or would like to arrange a school visit they can contact Lowewood Museum on 01992 445596.
Residents will also appreciate the the displays of memorabilia at the museum, and for the younger people there is the opportunity to see materials they have only read about.
The museum also contains many different artefacts from varied periods in history and welcomes visits by residents, schools and clubs, it is open Wednesday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm daily, admission is free
